Discovery Drive of the Stockman's Way
Forbes - Bogan Gate - Trundle - Tullamore - Albert - Tottenham - Nyngan Driving on the Newell Highway or looking to head west for an alternative route?
Head north-west from Forbes to Bogan Gate and proceed north to explore the towns of Trundle, Tullamore, Albert and Tottenham before linking with the Mitchell Highway at Trangie or Nyngan. The Bogan Way offers a great route for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the highway and get back to a leisurely way of doing things.
These towns have much to offer. Often described as the real NSW, they each offer a tapestry of history, nature and diversity in the peace and quiet of the Heart of NSW.
BOGAN GATE - famous Australian solider Henry Harbord (The Breaker) Morant, who was also a poet, horse-breaker, jackeroo and drover; spent many of his days in the Bogan Gate region and a memorial is now dedicated to him in the town. The Railway Arts & Crafts Centre is well worth a visit on weekends and public holidays between 10am - 5pm and no visit would be complete without a delicious Devonshire Tea. For further information contact the Bogan Gate Railway Station Arts & Crafts Centre on 02 6864 1179.
TRUNDLE - the heritage-listed Trundle Hotel was built in 1909 in three stages over a three-year period. It is two stories high, built out of pise mud and rendered with cement. The Hotel also claims the longest wooden verandah in NSW, and the town has the widest main street in the State. Why not camp and explore the Black Range. For further information contact the Trundle Information Centre (Clarke's Garage) on 02 6892 1093.
TULLAMORE - is a renowned rural area where sheep and cattle grazing, along with crop production form the major industry. The people are warm hearted and friendly and will offer you a big country welcome all year round. For further information contact the Tullamore Bowling & Citizen's Club on 02 6892 5250.
ALBERT - Much of the country along The Stockman's Way has provided inspiration for Australia's poets, authors and artists. None more so than the inspiration for Eric Jolliffe of Saltbush Bill fame - the Albert Rabbit Trap Hotel. An isolated watering hole, the Rabbit Trap in Albert is a welcome respite for any traveller.
TOTTENHAM - is only 32 kms from the geographic centre of NSW, which is marked with a cairn north west of the town. Tottenham is within about 60 kms of the Mitchell Highway at Nevertire or Nyngan, linking to Bourke via the Mitchell Highway and to Cobar via the Barrier Highway or head to Dubbo and rejoing the Newell Highway/ For further information contact the Tottenham Tourist Information Centre on 02 6892 4020.
