Trundle School of Arts

The earliest official information obtainable concerning the School of Arts is a letter from the Progress Committee, Trundle, dated 6th September, 1892, to the Minister for Public Works requesting that he place on the estimates for 1893 an amount of £100 ($200.00) as a Grant towards erecting a School of Arts in Trundle estimated to cost £200 ($400). The letter pointed out the importance of the district. It stated that the settlement which was taking place, and as it was the business centre between Parkes, Forbes, Condobolin and Dandaloo, it was necessary that the building be constructed.

The name of the Secretary of the Committee on the letter is not very legible, but appears to be Alf. H. Horana. The land on which the premises were to be erected was gazetted as follows:

Certificate of Title 2049 - 168.
1 Rood 19 Perches, Gobondery Street, Trundle, vested in

Trustees under the provisions of the School of Arts enabling Act. Original Trustees being: George Hutton, Michael Kerin, Harry A. Croft, William Todd, James Pike, Christopher Francis, Patrick Parnell.

The building was presumed to be completed in 1893 but dimensions and details of the building are not available, being destroyed in the fire.

Trustees as shown in the records as at 26 October 1909 were then: E. M. V. Curr, John H. Arthur, Thos. Carey, John Moloney, F. W. Gibson, Wm. Todd

In June 1912, gas lights were installed in the Hall. The Committee for 1913 were: W. H. Osborne (Chair), Lindsay Todd, H. E. Hodgkinson, John Skinner, T. H. Mahoney, J. Medlyn, J. J. Cornett, C. Bottrill, J. H. Lees, G. C. Little, C. R. Young, C. P. Scanlon (Secretary).

In September, 1914, a Public Meeting was called by W. H. Osborne, as Convenor, to raise funds to erect a new Hall adjoining the present structure, thus enlarging the whole building, the new part to have an up-to-date floor with pine walls, to be painted, and have new lights fitted. The contract was let to A. E. Ware 10 December 1914.

The Grand Opening took place 3rd February, 1915. The Hall was now a very important amenity for the local community. Dances, pictures, concerts, local and travelling were held at regular intervals, and all local bodies used the Hall for their meetings. As well as a social venue, the Hall contained a very extensive collection of books which were available to subscribers, quarterly subscription being 2/6.

Among the distinguished guests who spoke in the Hall was the Prime Minister, Mr. W. M. Hughes, on 20/11/1922. On Thursday, 23rd March, 1923, the Hall and contents were completely gutted by fire, with nothing saved

On Friday, 30th March, 1923, a special meeting was held in the Soldiers' Club Room to consider the position as all records had been burnt. Present at that meeting were: Cratchley, Smith, Ross, Webb, Bloomfield, J. Henson, H. Cameron, J. Medlyn.

On 3rd April, 1923, Trustees W. Long and J. J. Moloney had a meeting on Finances. The amount received from the Insurance Company was £1000 (one thousand pounds), which was then invested in the Government Savings Bank and the Commonwealth Savings Bank. The final chapter of the School of Arts was written when this block of ground where the building stood was sold by order of the Education Department. First it was offered by Public Auction by Medlyn Bros on 18th August 1923. There was no bid. It was later sold to the Church of England.

From March, 1923, all public functions were held in Wests' Hall, Forbes Street, but the people were already planning a new Hall.

A new Library was opened in Mrs. A. Davis' home, in 1924, and Miss Amy Davis appointed Librarian at 10/- (ten shillings) per week.

Also a new piano, a Victor Academy was purchased by the Hall Committee in 1924 for £131.16/0 (one hundred and thirty one pounds sixteen shillings), same being housed in the Masonic Lodge premises and Wests' Hall when functions were held.
