Jun - NSW Under 18 Team

Red Bend, Group 11, Western Rams and Country lock, Sam Coster, was named in the team to play Queensland 18's at ANZ Stadium on Wednesday 15 June, prior to the second State of Origin Game.
Sam was the only country based player to be selected in the team coached by Craig Sandercock. Sams follows in the footsteps of Parkes footballers, Brad Jayet who played for Western Division, Country and NSW against Queensland in 1978 and Travis Ware in 1988.

Match Report:

There will be no shortage of passion in future State of Origin matches if the U18’s fiery curtain-raiser to game two at ANZ Stadium is anything to go by.

The match, comfortably won by the NSW under 18s 16-6 over their Queensland counterparts, erupted five minutes into the second half when a brawl broke out on the Blues' try line. The scrap started when NSW fullback Nesiasi Mataitonga was set upon after he spilled a grubber kick and escalated into four separate fights.

NSW were fired up by champion Blues prop Glenn Lazarus, who handed them their jerseys pre-game, while coach Craig Sandercock said he had showed his team highlights of some of the great Origin moments during the week. "I got a little bit of vision and a few highlights of what Origin means and that probably fired the boys a little bit and inspired them to have a bit of a dig," Sandercock said.

Queensland may have won the fight - they received the penalty - but the Blues showed their future looks promising with tries to Sam Coster, back rower Kyle Lovett and Michael Lichaa securing the win.

Showing their never-say-die spirit, Queensland fought until the final whistle and were rewarded with a try in the 53rd minute to Tautau Moga.

Two players left the field with potentially serious injuries, with Blues lock Ben Roose dislocating his knee and Queensland's Caleb Binge suffering an ankle injury. Binge was the player who accused Penrith centre Timana Tahu of racial abuse last season.

Thailand Success

Debbie was part of the recent 2011 MASA Thailand Tour, trained hard for the fight against a seasoned and tough Thai opponent. The fight was fought under full Thai rules - hands, feet, knees and elbows - in extremely humid conditions. Debbie had to dig deep as all the betting was on the more experienced Thai girl.

Debbie trains at the Jukudokai Gym situated at the Parkes PCYC under head trainer Darren Jordan. Darren said Debbie's better boxing skills paved the way for a victory.

"It was a very gutsy win. The fight had the crowd roaring, both Thai and foreign alike, as the battle see-sawed back and forth," Darren said.

In the end, the Thai referee raised Debbie's hand in what has become a historic win!

Surf Lifesaving Hall of Fame

Surf Lifesaving Australia has inducted the Killcare Men's Beach Relay Team into its Hall of Fame. The relay team dominated racing from 2000 to 2006, with five consecutive titles at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships plus four straight word titles.

The team of Adam Bird, Stephen Munnery, Brice Johnson (Brice Johnson is the son of Sue and Graham, formerly of Trundle) and Marcus Kain were all part of the Killcare team to claim a fifth straight national gold, breaking the previous record of two in a row.

Club coach John Bourne, said the team was thrilled to be officially recognized for their achievements. Our team was formed in 1999, mainly to boost patrol members for Killcare SLSC, he said.

The club only had 20 patrolling members at that stage so the new relay team combined with the local winter swimming clubs, added much needed members. In our first season together, we won the Aussie and World titles which was an amazing feat. Over the years, we had a few relay members change due to injury, work commitments and geography, but the team spirit and enthusiasm stayed the same.

The SLSA Hall of Fame was founded, in 2002 and recognizes members and teams who .have made an outstanding contribution to surf lifesaving.
