FLOOD STUDY FOR TRUNDLE

Parkes Shire Council has received a grant to assist in devising a plan to prevent flooding in Trundle.

The Minister for Environment, Robyn Parker has advised council that a grant up to $40.000 has been allocated for a flood and rick management study of the Trundle catchment.

Council's Director of Engineering Services, Steve Barry said the flooding issue was raised by the Trundle Community Consultative Committee early in 2010. “The committee requested improved road access to Trundle during floods, and particularly improved access to Trundle Hospital during flooding. The completion of a flood plan to address the flooding in Trundle was a priority issue for the committee,” he said.

Trundle has a history of flooding events that cause access issues and damage to private and public assets. Some residential areas can become inundated in extreme events as a consequence of the water course which bisects the town.

The flood study would investigate measures to protect infrastructure and the grant will go towards a consultant to investigate and develop the plan.

The funding requires the council form a Floodplain Management Committee to oversee the plan and assess risks and options. This committee will include representatives from emergency services, Department of Environment and Heritage, council staff, at least one councillor and at least one member of the community.
